Google launches Commerce Search Solution

With Google’s new powerful search solution, online shopping will never be the same. The new “Google Commerce Search” feature is designed specifically to help online retailers showcase their products more efficiently.

Just in time for the 2009 year-end shopping season, Google unveiled its newest creation: Commerce Search. Google designed this new business enterprise solution to support established and influential ecommerce sites in these troubled economic times.

Google Commerce Search can be viewed as a Custom Search Engine for online retailers. According to a post on the official Google Blog site, Commerce Search aims to make the otherwise cumbersome task of searching for products on e-commerce sites easier and more fun.

Taking a closer look at the new search solution, the following features and benefits will soon emerge:

  • Google applied their standard, intuitive, super fast Google searching technology. This enables consumers to find the right products in no time.
  • Products are filtered by category, price, brand, and or other attributes.
  • The search company’s new solution includes features like spell check, synonyms, sorting and parametric search.
  • Refined search functionality allows consumers to generate groupings based on their queries and search results.
  • Queries are handled more efficiently and faster during busy times, such as Christmas, Valentine’s Day, Mother’s Day, etc.
  • Managing product promotions is less complicated. Vendors and website administrators have complete control and can customize, track, and optimize performance. They can also determine how products will be displayed.
  • Search solution can be deployed in days with effortless scaling.
  • Google Analytics offers customized reporting and statistical analysis.
  • The cost for Google Commerce Search will depend on the amount of products/items on display and the number of search queries.

In a recent statement, Dave Girouard, president of Google Enterprise said: “We’re excited to bring Google Commerce Search to market in time for the holidays.”

“To date, the technology powering retail website stores has not kept pace with innovation in search. Google Commerce Search will help customers find accurate results extremely fast, to the benefit of retailers and customers alike,” he added.

Undocumented speculations suggest that Google’s latest search program was designed to compete with Bing, Microsoft’s search engine, but that is not really true. When analyzing the structure of both search services, it becomes quite clear that Bing’s intent is to help the actual shoppers, while Google Commerce Search is going more after the retailers.

We won’t know how effective and successful Google Commerce Search will be until it has had a decent run. Jim Murphy, an analyst with AMR Research, felt that the service could indeed be tremendously beneficial to online retailers since many of them are dissatisfied with their current product search capabilities.

“My sense is that the very top retailers have solid search/e-commerce solutions, but there seems to be a lot of opportunity for mid-to-large retailers,” he said. “I see it as a fledgling product. It might serve as a stop-gap solution for search-hungry retailers today, though proving its worth it for this holiday season might be a challenge. But, in Google’s typical style, I’m sure it will improve quickly over a short period of time.”

Commerce Search will definitely be beneficial to e-merchants globally, and not just for its search capabilities. Participating in the program will increase search engine optimisation and can also make any commercial website more SEO friendly. The more optimized a website is, the higher the rankings will be in the Commerce Search results. As we all know, higher rankings lead to more visitors, conversions and ultimately, more sales.
